SEMINÁRIO INTERNACIONAL SOBRE A IMPORTÂNCIA DAS LINHAS DE TORRES NA EUROPA Auditório Municipal de Arruda dos Vinhos 20, 21 e 22 de Novembro de 2008. O Seminário Internacional sobre a Importância das Linhas de Torres é uma acção do projecto ROTA HISTÓRICA DAS LINHAS DE TORRES, financiado pela Islândia, Liechtenstein e Noruega através do Mecanismo Financeiro do Espaço Económico Europeu, tem o Alto Patrocínio de Sua Excelência o Presidente da República Portuguesa e o apoio da Real Embaixada da Noruega.
O objectivo do seminário transcende a esfera da História das Guerras Peninsulares e assume-se como uma oportunidade de chamar a atenção da população em geral, e da comunidade científica em particular, para a importância e especificidade do sistema militar defensivo de Lisboa, denominado por Linhas de Torres.
A Plataforma Intermunicipal para as Linhas de Torres, preside à organização deste evento de carácter científico internacional e de divulgação junto de técnicos especialistas das universidades, museus, centros de investigação, associações de ambiente e de património.

The International Seminar on The Importance of Lines of Torres is a measure of the project HISTORICAL ROUTE OF THE LINES OF TORRES, financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the financial mechanism of the European Economic Area, has the High Auspicious of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic and has the support of the Royal Norwegian Embassy.
The objective of this seminar goes beyond the Peninsular Wars History and is perceived as an opportunity to raise awareness both to the general public and the scientific community in particular for the importance and specifics of Lisbon’s complex military defensive system usually known as Lines of Torres.
The Intermunicipal Platform for the Lines of Torres is the chairman organization of this both scientific and promotional event for all from students, to local, regional and national authorities, universities, museums, research centres, and environment and heritage associations.
One of the overall goals of this seminar is to open an opportunity for reflection, debate, share of ideas and scientific knowledge, both practical and theoretical experiences on cultural tourism, natural landscape, and military architecture and cultural heritage, namely:
a - To approach and exchange ideas with several experts for a debate: the Lines of Torres as a pretext for economical development through cultural tourism;
b - To analyse both the opportunities and challenges for the implementation of a Tourist Route such as The Historical Route of the Lines of Torres;
c - The territorial planning, management and sustainability of The Historical Route of the Lines of Torres. The balance between integrated touristic development and both natural and cultural heritage preservation.
d - Finding strategies to enhance The Historical Route of the Lines of Torres as leverage for regional and local development. Presenting this Historical Route (landscape and cultural heritage) as an innovative touristic offer just up North of Lisbon city.
Participant profile: Local, Regional and National public authorities, economic and cultural development organizations, military institutions, tourism industry companies and professionals, local and regional development associations, academic community, researchers from both the archaeological, historical, sociological and cultural sectors. During the seminar you will be able to attend the Opening table, paper presentations, thematic debates, study fieldtrips, posters exhibition and book show.
Working languages: The working languages will be Portuguese and English with simultaneous translation.
Opening table: Official presentation of The Historical Route of the Lines of Torres and its most significant activities. This historical route if perceived as case study opens to the insights of all present and their contributions through debate.
Paper presentations: open to researchers and professional scholars which work on the fields of historical, natural, cultural and military heritage.
Thematic debates: organized around two particular issues: one, Conservation, restoration, rehabilitation and maintenance of military structures; and two, Cultural Touring and Development where both national an international experts will be present.
Study fieldtrips: offering the possibility for all the participants to experience a direct contact with a set of military structures within the six municipalities; it will be an excellent opportunity to grasp more insights and suggestions.
Posters exhibition: present other case studies and projects with similarities to the Lines of Torres and seminar themes.
Book show: a set of several titles about the Lines of Torres, books, bibliographic lists and iconography.
