The purpose of the Project is the instigation of economically viable agro-forestry activities, with the overall objective of enhancing the economic development in Barrancos through activities based on sustainable management of its natural land and forest resources. Reference is made to the application dated 8 May 2006, and additional information provided by the Focal Point on 09 January, 02 March, 20 April, 15 June and 25 June 2007.
The completed Project shall include the following activities and results: - baseline study (data and information collection, compilation and analysis; data storage and display in a GIS system; division in landscape types; identification of forest owners; area characterisation and resource assessment / identification of potentials; sustainability diagnosis of the area); - marketing activities (preparation of a Market Assessment Report and Action Plan; brochure preparation; marketing and technology training amongst producers); - establishing a producers' network (information and experience exchange); - establishing a demonstration centre and piloting activities (land acquisition for a value not exceeding 145,000, and establishment of demonstration centre infrastructure; piloting and demonstrating various agro-forestry production methods in smaller areas); - information dissemination, communication and education (preparing information brochures and investment support guide on good management practices; training in appropriate technology; meetings with stakeholders and technical support to new projects ).
The Project Promoter is Barrancos Municipality. The Project further involves the following partners: Assoçiâdo Barranquenha Para o Desenvolvimento (ABpD); the Association for the Protection of the Heritage of Mértola (ADPM); and Tterra. The Focal Point shall ensure that the Project Promoter provides 28.51 percent of the estimated eligible Project cost.
